What’s so special about bamboo straws?
Most straws are made from plastics called polypropylene and polystyrene which, unless recycled, can take hundreds of years to decompose.
To quote UK figures an estimated 8.5 billion plastic straws are used per year and they have been found to be among the the top ten items collected during beach clean ups.
Following a petition in which 80% of the public voted in favour, the UK government banned plastic straws from 2020 meaning alternatives have never been more needed.
Bamboo is not only biodegradable, it is also an environmentally sustainable material and one of the worlds fastest growing naturally renewing resources. Bamboo is also ‘straw like’ by nature meaning (unlike other materials) the final product has endured little factory processing (this means a very low carbon footprint).
Bamboo straws are therefore by far one of the most eco-friendly reusable straw designs.
